The Nebraska Back to School Sales Tax Holiday

I will introduce next session a bill that would provide a back-to-school sales tax holiday prior to the
start of the school year. This bill will help families prepare their children for the upcoming school year. The holiday will exempt from sales tax clothing and back-to-school supplies. I have introduced this bill the past two sessions because I believe it is important to support working families.

The sales tax holiday in Iowa scheduled for this weekend is renewing pleas to have one in Nebraska.

State Sen. Bill Avery of Lincoln says the state needs a holiday from sales taxes during the back-to-school shopping season to compete with Iowa. Missouri also gives shoppers a short reprieve from taxes, and a total of about 15 states do so.

Sales tax holiday

State lawmakers are proposing a new state holiday that would be celebrated by penny-pinching Nebraskans.

Sens. Rich Pahls of Omaha and Bill Avery of Lincoln want a three-day moratorium on the state sales tax during the first week of every August, a popular time for parents to buy school supplies. Similar legislative proposals have fallen flat before.
