Breaking election-related laws is wrong, but should it be grounds for impeachment?
Lawmakers struggled with that question Thursday and want time to talk it over before voting on a proposed amendment (LR4CA) to the state constitution. It would make breaking laws during campaigns grounds for impeaching some elected officials.
“It would be an important deterrent to campaign misdeeds by raising the ante,’’ said Sen. Bill Avery of Lincoln, who introduced the measure. If supported by Legislature, the proposed amendment would still have to get final approval from voters in the November election.
“I think we should send the message that campaigns should not be win-at-all-costs endeavors,’’ Avery said.

LINCOLN — Voters could be given the chance to make it clear that bad behavior by candidates while they campaign could lead to their removal from office.
